Welcome to Books by Teens. Here, we believe that your students are the experts in their lives and worlds. When they talk - in class and in our books - they have the opportunity to think before they act on so many complex issues in their lives. As an educator, this is a unique approach to motivate students to discuss and think through the issues they face in their daily lives. Books by Teens is a vehicle for adolescents, as readers and writers, to participate in decision-making that impacts directly on themselves, their peers, and their physical and emotional well-being. Join us in this revolutionary new style of learning.

Why do the issues in Books by Teens belong in the classroom? Kids have to deal with the issues of growing up in a complex world - whether through their own experiences, their friends, seeing it happen to other kids in school, or watching it on television, the movies, or the internet. While they're old enough to be exposed to these issues, they're often too young to integrate cause and effect, and to predict short and long-term consequences. It's hard enough to do that as an adult - as a teenager, it's often impossible. Everything from bullying and divorce to diversity and peer pressure, the internet, and dangers of group think impact on our teenagers.

How can Books by Teens be integrated into school curriculum? Lectures don't work very well. Research has shown that people of all ages learn and retain limited information from a lecture environment. The best approach is hands-on, active involvement where teachers and students can use real-life situations to find safe, effective solutions. Books by Teens exposes students to frank, heartfelt issues by seeing them through the eyes of the characters. Your students will know that their peers participated in writing, editing, illustrating and plotting the content. When read along with YOU ARE THE AUTHOR!, students have the opportunity to write their own version of the story.
